In Limoux

The bars and restaurants of The Place de la Republique, the heart of Limoux, are 5 minutes walk away and there are several bakeries and grocery shops within an easy walk. Larger supermarkets are a little further afield (1 - 2km away). There is a fresh food market every Friday morning in town and a night market on Tuesdays during the summer.

Limoux is well known for its sparkling wine (Blanquette de Limoux) and its carnival, that spans two months in the winter. There are a few wineries to visit in town and many within the surrounding AOC regions of Limoux and Malepere. It is thought that the abbey in nearby Saint-Hilaire made the first sparkling wine in the world! Carnival activities are typically held on weekends between January and March each year culminating in the “Carnival du Monde”. There are plenty of other festivities held in town throughout the year - check the calendar at the tourist office http://www.tourisme-limoux-in-aude.fr/fr/accueil.

Around Limoux

Limoux is in the foothills of the Pyrenees that are easily accessible for a day trip or longer. For those who love snow and skiing, the closest ski station Camurac is within an hour’s drive. Beach lovers have to cover the same distance to visit the Mediterranean with a number of quaint beach villages that are well known for their seafood.  If you love oysters and seafood you are in for a treat in Leucate and Gruissan.

Limoux is in the Aude named after the river Aude that runs through the town. The Aude has many nearby lovely villages and towns to explore. Renting a car or a bike makes it easy to visit them and is definitely worthwhile considering. There are several cheap options in Limoux. (https://www.maletlocation.fr/, https://www.e-leclerc.com/limoux).

The area has several towns that are well known for their weekly markets. Mirepoix with its vibrant Monday morning market, the buzzy Saturday morning market at Carcassonne and the slightly ‘New Age’ Esperaza on Sunday mornings all deserve a visit. They all let you immerse in the best local produce, handmade crafts and to get a taste of how the locals live.

Cathar Country

For those who love history Limoux is surrounded by Cathar Castles. You can take your pick from Puivert, Puilaurens and Montsegur relatively close, to Chateau de Peyrepertuse and Queribus a bit further afield. Of course, La Cite in Carcassonne is a must!

The surroundings of Limoux offer many options for walks and hikes, from easy to more advanced, through dense forests, over hills and crests to surprise you with incredible panoramas of the Pyrenees and sweeping valleys.

Its Wines

Limoux is a mecca for wine lovers. It has its own Appellation, created in 2003 for both white and red wines, and because of its location, the area produces a type of wine quite different from other appellations. It is increasingly famous for its sparkling wine ‘Blanquette de Limoux’ and there are dozens of wineries who welcome visitors. During the summer months many winegrowers organise tasting events with local food and entertainment.

To Sum It Up!

Limoux and surroundings offer something for every taste. Whether you love historical, are a foodie or a wine buff or love being surrounded by gorgeous scenery, it is all on your doorsteps in this beautiful part of the Languedoc.
